Bathroom pests: drain flies, cockroaches and ants — causes and fixes

By RD Pest Control ·

Tiny flies on the bathroom wall, cockroaches from the drain or ants near the basin? Here is what causes each bathroom pest and the fixes that work.

The bathroom is one of the most common places for pests in a Vadodara home. It is damp, warm, has drains connected to the rest of the building, and often has small cracks and gaps that go unnoticed.

The three pests people complain about most in bathrooms are drain flies, cockroaches and ants. Each one has a slightly different cause, so the fix is different too.

Drain flies: the tiny "moth" flies on the wall

How to recognise them

Drain flies are very small, fuzzy, grey or brown flies that look a bit like tiny moths. You usually see them resting on bathroom walls, near the drain or on the mirror, and they fly weakly when disturbed.

What causes them

Drain flies breed in the slimy build-up inside drains: soap scum, hair and organic gunk that collects in floor traps, basin pipes and rarely used drains. They can also breed in overflow holes and areas where water stands under broken tiles.

Fixes

  • Clean the floor trap and basin drain thoroughly, including removing hair and slime
  • Scrub inside the drain with a brush where you can reach
  • Run water through drains in unused bathrooms regularly
  • Fix leaks and broken tiles where water collects underneath
  • Keep drain covers in place

Spraying the flies on the wall does little if the drain is still full of build-up. The breeding spot has to be cleaned.

Cockroaches: coming up from drains

What causes them

In flats and older buildings, cockroaches travel through shared drain lines, ducts and shafts. Bathroom floor traps, gaps around pipes and loose drain covers give them a way in. The damp, dark space under the washing area or behind the commode is a good hiding spot.

Fixes

  • Use drain covers that close, or fine mesh, on floor traps
  • Seal gaps around pipes where they enter walls and floors
  • Do not leave wet clothes and buckets in corners for long
  • Keep the bathroom dry at night where you can

If cockroaches are in the bathroom, check the kitchen too. They often move between the two. See cockroach control in Vadodara.

Ants: near the basin, tiles and windows

What causes them

Ants come to bathrooms for water, and sometimes for soaps, toothpaste or anything sweet. They often nest in wall cracks, behind loose tiles or inside door frames, and follow trails along grout lines and window frames.

Fixes

  • Wipe up toothpaste and soap residue
  • Fix dripping taps and leaks
  • Follow the ant trail to find where they are entering and seal it
  • Avoid wiping away trails with just water, as it only moves them along

For persistent house ants or black ants, see ant control.

Other bathroom visitors

Bathrooms also attract centipedes (kankhajura), especially in ground-floor homes and during the monsoon, and sometimes silverfish. These usually point to damp conditions and gaps. See centipede control if this is your problem.

Why bathroom pests keep coming back

Even after cleaning, bathroom pests can return because:

  • Drains are connected to the whole building, so pests come from outside your flat
  • Hidden leaks behind tiles keep corners damp
  • A rarely used bathroom lets drains dry out or build up slime
  • Gaps around pipes and loose tiles were never sealed

That is why a proper fix combines cleaning, sealing and, where needed, a targeted treatment.

What a bathroom pest control visit includes

Our bathroom pest control service covers the common bathroom pests together rather than one at a time. A typical visit includes:

  1. Inspecting drains, floor traps, basin pipes and corners
  2. Identifying which pests are present and where they are coming from
  3. Treating drains, gaps and hiding spots as needed
  4. Pointing out leaks, gaps and drain issues that need fixing

Odourless options are available for many treatments, which many families prefer for a closed space like a bathroom. Ask when booking.

Bathroom pest checklist

  • Clean floor traps and basin drains properly, not just the surface
  • Keep drain covers or mesh in place
  • Fix dripping taps and leaks behind tiles
  • Run water in unused bathrooms every few days
  • Seal gaps around pipes and repair loose tiles
  • Do not leave wet clothes, mops and buckets lying around
  • Check the kitchen if you see cockroaches in the bathroom

Summary

Drain flies come from slime inside drains, cockroaches come up through drain lines and gaps, and ants come for water and residue. Clean the breeding spots, close the entry points and keep the bathroom dry. If the problem keeps coming back, a professional treatment can deal with what you cannot reach.
