Odour vs odourless pest control: which should you choose for your home or office?
By RD Pest Control ·
Standard pest control medicines can leave a mild smell, while odourless options are gentler on the nose. Here is how to decide which suits your home, shop or office in Vadodara.
One of the first questions people ask before booking pest control is simple: will it smell? It is a fair question. Nobody wants a strong chemical smell in a bedroom, a kitchen, a busy office or a restaurant dining area.
At RD Pest Control we work with two kinds of medicines: standard medicines, which can have a mild smell for a while after treatment, and odourless options, which leave little or no smell. Odourless options are available for many treatments, but not every single job, so it is always worth asking when you book.
This guide explains the difference in plain language and helps you decide which one makes sense for your space.
What "odour" and "odourless" actually mean
Standard medicines
Many common pest control medicines have a noticeable smell when they are applied. In most homes this smell is mild and fades as the treated area airs out. How long it lasts depends on the room, ventilation, the weather and how much area was treated.
Standard medicines are widely used and work well for many pests. For people who are not sensitive to smells, and for spaces that can be aired out easily, they are often a perfectly good choice.
Odourless options
Odourless options are made so that they leave little or no smell after application. People usually choose them when:
- Someone at home is sensitive to smells or has breathing problems
- There are small children, elderly family members or pets at home
- The space needs to be used again soon, such as an office, clinic, shop or restaurant
- The area is closed and hard to ventilate, such as a cabin, storeroom or basement
"Odourless" means the smell is very low. It does not mean you can ignore safety. You still need to follow the precautions your technician explains, such as keeping children and pets away from treated areas for the time advised.
Does odourless mean weaker?
Not necessarily. The choice between the two is mostly about comfort and how quickly the space needs to be used again, not about one being "strong" and the other "weak". What matters more for results is:
- A proper inspection to find where pests are hiding and breeding
- Treating the right spots, not just spraying everywhere
- Fixing the cause, such as leaks, gaps, food left out or damp drains
- A follow-up visit where the pest problem needs it
We explain which option suits your problem before we start, so you are not guessing.
Which one should you choose?
Choose odourless if...
- You have a baby, young children, an elderly parent or someone with asthma at home
- You work from home or cannot leave the house for long
- It is an office, coaching class, clinic, salon or shop that opens soon after the visit
- It is a restaurant, café or hotel where guests should not notice any smell
- The room has poor ventilation
Standard medicines are usually fine if...
- The house or premises can be aired out well after treatment
- Nobody at home is sensitive to smells
- The treatment is in areas such as a godown, compound, parking area or factory shed
- You are comfortable stepping out for a while during and after the treatment

Homes vs offices: what usually changes
For homes, the main concerns are bedrooms, kitchens and the health of family members. Many families in Vadodara flats and bungalows choose odourless options for bedrooms and living areas, especially in summer when windows stay closed and the AC is running.
For offices and commercial premises, timing matters most. Many businesses prefer treatment outside working hours, and an odourless option can help staff and customers return without complaints. For restaurants and food businesses, the kitchen and storage areas need careful planning so food and utensils are protected.

A note on special treatments
Some treatments are a little different:
- Switch board dusting uses a dry powder inside electrical points, not a liquid spray. See switch board dusting treatment.
- Mosquito control can be done with smoke (fogging) or a medicine-based spray. Smoke fogging naturally has a visible fog and some smell while it is running.
- Termite treatment is usually done in specific spots and around the building, and the method depends on the structure.
In each case, ask us whether an odourless option is available for that particular job.
Simple checklist before your treatment
- Tell us if anyone at home is pregnant, elderly, unwell or has breathing problems
- Mention pets, birds and aquariums
- Ask whether an odourless option is available for your treatment
- Cover or put away food, utensils and drinking water
- Plan to keep children and pets away from treated areas for the time advised
- Open windows afterwards if your technician says it is fine
Summary
Standard medicines can leave a mild smell; odourless options keep the smell very low. Both can work well when the inspection and treatment are done properly. Choose based on who uses the space, how soon it needs to be used, and how easily it can be aired out.
